There’re so many routes and conditions you could be tested on, hence the reason why our driving School Won’t over-focus on just driving around test routes. Instead we’ll give you the skills that should give you the confidence to deal with any road or condition you maybe be Tested on.
It’s recommended to Arrive 10 minuets early at Widnes Test Centre, as it’ll ensure you can get Parked up and also be able to take a seat in the waiting area.
Make sure you take your driving licence (as proof of identity) as the examiner will need to check this before the Test can begin. If you forget it, you won’t be able to take the Test.
The Test normally lasts for around 40 minutes. It can take longer or last shorter. The time is largely dependent on the Test route you take and the traffic conditions.

An average price for a one hour driving lesson in widnes is around £37 – £42. The price will vary with some driving schools between daytime, evening and weekends. Another factor is the transmission you opt for. Generally it will cost more to learn to drive in an automatic car.
This really does depend on the individual. If we took the stats from every learner driver we have ever taught to drive, it would average out to around 40 one hour driving lessons in total.
The DVSA have done their own research nationally. They found on average across the country it takes learner drivers 45 one hour lessons with their instructor and 20 one hour private practice lessons.
Is this an accurate account of learner drivers across the country? We don’t think so, for the simple reason a large proportion of learner drivers who have gone on to pass their driving test never received any private practice.
Learning to drive shouldn’t just be about the time you spend in the car. Here are a couple of pointers – if followed, it could accelerate learning and help to save you some money on the overall cost of learning to drive.
- Read the Highway code. This will give you a deeper understanding and help you to be better equipped to apply theory into practice.
- Analyse other peoples driving. Try to analyse what’s good practice and what’s poor practice. We learn with our eyes so its really important we don’t pick up other drivers bad habits.
- Riding a bike. This isn’t for everyone but on the whole there’re transferable skills which will help accelerate how long it takes to learn how to drive.
The DVSA have conducted some research and their findings are, you’re 50% more likely to pass your driving test if you combine Private practice with the driving lessons you receive from a driving instructor. The findings also conclude that you’re 40% more likely to pass your driving test if you have experience of taking and passing mock driving tests.
Do we agree with the DVSA’S findings? 100%
Our recommendation is to combine private practice with driving lessons from your instructor, as it’ll help you to reinforce your skills and it should also help you to become more equipped to think and act independently.
We also advocate taking mock driving tests too. A driving lesson is a completely different experience to a Test. Adjusting to Test conditions will help you to evaluate and remedy your performance before taking the actual Test.
